Welcome to Enigma Automotive. The Channel Islands leading VAG Performance Specialist. We started software tuning in 2004 when we saw what Revo had to offer. We saw that this was the way forward for engine tuning. When we all first started in the motor industry, "tuning" meant gas-flowing, big valves, multiple carburettors and the like. These days, with emission regulations dictating that engines must run as cleanly and efficiently as possible, it is commonplace to see four- and five-valves-per-cylinder heads with lightning fast response fuel injection systems, turbochargers and closed-loop oxygen sensor control. All this is controlled by ever more sophisticated electronic control units (ECUs), or controllers. These are very akin to your lap-top computers, involving intrinsically two facets; hardware and software. The hardware is the box of electronics wizardry about six inches square. The software is the program(s), which they run and this is the interesting bit. By modifying the programming, one can alter the fuelling, timing, boost pressure etc. Together with some hardware changes, usually to air intake, charge cooling and exhaust flow, considerable power gains can be achieved. Some tuners do this by "chipping", that is to say replacing the EPROM (Erasable, Programmable Read Only Memory) chip in the ECU with another set of different parameters. Revo Technik took this a step further, in that they avoid any physical changes to the hardware at all and gain access to the engine controller through the car's EOBD 2 diagnostic port inside the cabin of the car. The software can therefore be changed in most cases directly, without even opening the bonnet! The process takes about fifteen minutes and can typically yield around 25-30% power and torque increases. If this can be complimented by a variety of hardware changes as mentioned above, then even more aggressive software can be used, although it is important to stress that with enhanced power comes the need for enhanced control, in uprated braking, cooling and suspension. Our Revo Technik products are complemented by Milltek Sport exhausts, and Catalytic Converter upgrades, Stratmosphere HX Hypreboost diverter valves and BMC CDA induction kits. For the more serious-minded, we are in the process of finalising a build list with Revo for fitting the new Garrett Eliminator range of hybrid turbochargers to the 1.8 T engines. These give dramatic power increases, but again we stress, this can only be done in conjunction with the appropriate hardware changes in other areas to cope with this |
